What are Customer-Managed Encryption Keys?

Customer-managed encryption keys, or CMEK, is a data encryption model that enables customers of a cloud service provider (CSP) to create and manage their own encryption keys. Since the encryption keys are owned by the customer, the customer is able to revoke access to data that is being stored with the CSP.

What are the Benefits of Customer-Managed Encryption Keys?

With customer-managed encryption keys, customers of cloud service providers benefit from:

  • Control Over Data Access – Third-party service providers would not be able to comply with requests to access customer data if the data is encrypted using CMEK and the customer disables access to the encryption keys.
  • Stop Data Breaches – If the customer experiences a breach, such as stolen credentials or social engineering, they may disable the third-party service provider’s access to the encryption keys to prevent any further access to their data until the credentials have been reset.
  • Control over Data Retention – Upon service termination, the customer can be certain that any data they uploaded in the cloud is no longer accessible by disabling the encryption keys.

TitanFile then uses this key to encrypt any files uploaded by the customer or their users to TitanFile. Since the encryption key is owned and managed by the customer, they can revoke access to the key at any time, or delete it, preventing TitanFile and anyone else from accessing the data.
